Ophalmology Department Bugando Medical Centre conducts a Cataract camp
200 Lake Zone citizens received cataract services at Bugando Medical Centre. A team of six doctors from the US
Weill Cornell Hospital together with Moran Eye Centre (UTAH STATE) led by the program manager Lori McCoy
performed the surgery on patients with cataract problem in collaboration with Bugando Medical Centre specialist
doctors. The camp was held for one week from 1st March 2020 - 7th March 2020.
Speaking at the surgical camp Dr. Christopher Mwanansao (OPTOMETRIST) at Bugando Medical Centre said that,
this is the second visit for the team of doctors from America to conduct camps at Bugando whereby last year
when they came they performed surgery on 91 patients with cataract .This year, they came with the goal of performing surgery to 200 patients.
In addition this team has come with various equipment including surgical beds, sterilization equipment and BP machine.
They are also planning on bringing laser machine and ultrasound for the purpose of eyes. They also trained 23 nurses from Lindi,
Moshi and Mwanza in optical Health Care.
