Historical Background.
The Catholic Church built the Hospital between 1968 - 1977 and it was offically opened by His Excellency the late President
Julius Kambarage Nyerere on 3rd November 1971. In 1972 the Hospital was nationlized by the Government. However, in October 1985 the
Government handed back the Hospital to the Tanzania Episcopal Conference of the Catholic Bishops of Tanzania who is the owner with an
agreement that the hospital be run in partnership

Cancer Treatment Services.
Cancer treatment and the Department was established in 2009.Primarily as treatment and care facility.
During different outreach campaigns especially screening,the community is reached and awareness
on the risks,prevention and early detection are being done.
Also this exercise is being done at the department on daily basis during treatment schedules,
special activity eg Pink and Red Ribbon months,also when patients are waiting to be seen in the clinics through posters and leaflets.

Emergency Services and Accidents.
The Emergency Medicine Department (EMD) at Bugando medical centre is the first
full capacity public emergency department in Lake zone of Tanzania. The department is under the directorate
of medical services. Prior to becoming full capacity EMD with trained Emergency Medicine Physicians, the department
provides care within the available resources.
A recent project of rehabilitation and expansion has made more professional provision of service possible.
The EMD BMC offers best healthcare for ill and trauma patients; to various organisations,
companies and institutions not forgetting the general public; by highly trained medical staff.

Renal Services (Dialysis).
Expansion and Strengthening of the Dialysis Unit
A total of 10 machines are available for Dialysis and efforts are being made
to upgrade the unit to 20 machines due to the increasing demand from the patients.
The ultimate goal is to provide renal transplant.
Gastrointestinal Services (Endoscopy).
Strengthening the Endoscopy Unit
The endoscopy Units is now well equipped with gastroscopies, colonoscopies,
forceps biopsies, ligators and a number of processors, allowing diagnostic and interventional procedures.
The number of procedures has increased significantly from 396 in September -December 2017 to 719 in July to September 2018.
Inpatient Private and VIP services.
Bugando Medical Centre has new and renovated Private and VIP wings which
cater for patients who would prefer to have such services. The Private Wing has 38 beds including
5 beds High Dependence Unit (HDU) with 24 hours critical nursing services. There are 5 rooms, each
room containing 5 beds that are well partitioned for privacy and share 2 bathrooms and toilets.

Orthopedic Surgery and Accidents/Trauma Services.
The department was established in 2014 with 3 orthopaedic surgeons, who were offering broad spectrum of
Orthopaedic conditions including trauma, Paediatric conditions, degenerative joint conditions, bone and joint
infection conditions, skin and bone defects etc.Since then the Department has grown to 9 qualified Orthopaedic Surgeons,
with variable subspecializationsin trauma, Arthroscopic surgery, PaediatricOrthopaedic/Arthroplasty surgery,
Spine Orthopaedic surgeries and pelvic reconstruction surgery. The College of Surgeon, East and Central and Southern Africa
(COSECSA) has nominated Bugando Medical Centre to start offering training in Fellows of Orthopaedic Surgery and trauma in COSECSA.

Cardiac, thoracic and vascular surgeries at BMC begun in 2006 with one cardiothoracic surgeon,
Prof.William Mahalu,who was the founder of Department and services. Since then, the Department has grown, and currently
has 3 specialists, 2 registrars, 2 perfusionists and 4scrubbing nurses. The Department is able to provide; Cardiac surgery
-both closed and open heart surgery to adults and children, Chest surgery due to trauma, infection, malignant, benign,
Esophageal surgery , Pulmonary surgery and Vascular surgery. It works in collaboration with other close partners such as
Jakaya kikwete cardiac institute (JKCI), theCatholic university of health and allied sciences (CUHAS),
Cornell University (US) and Apollo Hospital (India).

IV Fluids Industrial Production
Bugando Medical Centre I.V fluid production Unit is producing glass bottled Intravenous
fluids at a capacity of 6000 bottles of 500mls and 250ml per month and 72,000 per year.
This serves the hospital revenue of TZS 9,000,000/= per year compared to purchase from MSD.

Oxygen Industrial Plant.
BMC has a managed to sustain the production of oxygen (from its own plants) so save the
life of many patients admitted in the Hospital particular in the ICU, Theatre and Emergency Department.

Bugando Heart Institute.
Construction of a Cardiac Institute (+ Cath lab)
BMC is currently expanding its medical care in a number of super specialitiesincluding Cardiothoracic Surgery and Cardiology,
due to the growing burden of heart diseases in the region. This has been associated with high mortality and morbidities due
to lack of advanced and accessible cardiovascular services in this region.
The number of patients with heart diseases has been
on increase at BMC, overriding the available resources, thus calling for a need to expand the cardiovascular services.

Lake Zone Childhood Blindness Prventation Project
Bugando Medical Centre in collaboration with ChristophellBlinden Mission soon
will lounge a four years project for childhood blindness prevention within Lake Zone regions.
The aim of the project is to build capacity of Bugando Medical Centre to become a reliable centre that offers a
qualified eye services along the lake zones regions. The project will involve the construction of the eye centre and equipment,
outreaches within Mwanza and lake zones regions, training of health workers to improve early identification of children with
vision problems.

Delivering excellence in Diagnostics
Procurement and Delivery of a CT Scan Machine A 128 slice CT scan machine was purchased from Siemens in December 2018.
This was one of the major achievements which has resulted into reduction of suffering to Wananchi who could not be easily
diagnosed unless they travel to other Referral Hospitals outside the region. The Hospital could not purchase a CT Scan Machine
for more than 4 years due to financial Constraints.
The CT Scan services are provided for 24hrs and serve an average of 25-35
patients /day.

BMC Oryx Mlimani Filling Station.
BMC Oryx Mlimani filling station is belonging to Bugando Medical Centre since February, 2018. It is situated along the Wurzburg Road near Bugando Hill Restaurant on the way to Bugando Medical Centre from Mwanza city centre. This Filling station is operated under the special agreement with Oryx Company limited. Currently we are selling Petrol and diesel in a market price which is very affordable to consumers. In addition we are selling Oryx cooking gases.
