Consultant and Teaching Hospital for the Lake and Western zones of the United Republic of Tanzania
The department was established in 2014 with 3 orthopaedic surgeons, who were offering broad
spectrum of Orthopaedic conditions including trauma, Paediatric conditions, degenerative joint conditions, bone
and joint infection conditions, skin and bone defects etc.Since then the Department has grown to 9 qualified Orthopaedic Surgeons,
with variable subspecializationsin trauma, Arthroscopic surgery, PaediatricOrthopaedic/Arthroplasty surgery, Spine Orthopaedic surgeries
and pelvic reconstruction surgery.
The College of Surgeon, East and Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA) has nominated
Bugando Medical Centre to start offering training in Fellows of Orthopaedic Surgery and trauma in COSECSA.
This is facilitated by having fellows of Orthopaedic Surgery under COSECSA in the department.
The department offers Masters
of Medicine (Mmed) in Orthopaedic Surgery and traumatology. Plans are ongoing to establish superspecialized units that
will ensure highly advanced and quality Orthopaedic services are offered.
These superspecialized units include:
Paediatric/ReconstructionOrthopaedic
surgery Services, Arthroplasty Surgery services, Arthroscopy surgery services, Spine Orthopaedic surgery service,
Trauma/pelvic surgery services and Hand surgery.
