Consultant and Teaching Hospital for the Lake and Western zones of the United Republic of Tanzania
The institute started by running three (3) years medical assistant training course in 1972. The course was conducted for 14 years. In 1985 the institute was changed from training Diploma in clinical medicine to Advanced Diploma in Clinical Medicine whereby graduates were Assistants Medical Officers (AMOs), up to now about 1120 AMOs have graduated. The AMO School was changed to Lake zone health training institute (LZHTI) in 2017. The Institute was accredited by NACTE in August 2017. Currently, the institute has changed from lake zone health training institute (LZHTI) to Mwanza College of Health and Allied Sciences (MWACHAS) in 2019, there are six departments; Clinical Medicine, Physiotherapy, Health Information sciences, Pharmacy, Nursing, Gender and Community Development and Health Professional Education. The Institute has the Quality Assurance Unit (QAU) to monitor the quality of training, services, infrastructure, clinical, governance and administration. The quality assurance is contacted in order to improve and maintain the quality training programs and services so as to comply with the requirements of regulatory authorities for examples NACTE. .
The Department of Physiotherapy at MWACHAS was established in 2018 when Physiotherapy training program started. The program started by enrolling 51
Students for NTA Level 4 in the academic year 2018/2019. In the academic year 2019/2020 a total of 31 Students were enrolled, making a total of 82
students for NTA level 4 and 5. The program is run by competent Clinical Instructors and professional Tutors devoted at delivering quality and updated
knowledge and skills to students as far as the COMPETENCE BASED TRAINING is concerned. The staff at MWACHAS are always available to solve Students’ matters.

The nursing training started in 1972 which was offering preservice program under the ministry of health, and the school is in Bugando Hospital premises. In December, 2019, the three government schools were joined together and nursing is among of the department in MWACHAS. Admission Requirements Department currently is having two programs three years nursing training and two years in service e-learning program. Health Information Science course established by Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children under Mwanza College of Health and Allied sciences in academic year 2018/2019 with total of 32 students which aims to produce a profession dedicated to effective management of health information and data. These professionals are trained to serve the health industry and the public by managing, analyzing and utilizing health information vital for health education purposes, patient care and making data accessible to health care providers, trainers and the public. HIS professionals who perfect their technical skills become experts in health information collection, processing, storage, and dissemination activities while maintaining the highest standards of health information integrity, confidentiality and security. Admission Requirements Admission to Basic Technician Certificate in Health Information Science programme will be open to a candidate who has a minimum of four passes in Biology, English, Mathematics and any other subject, except Religious subjects, all obtained from Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (CSEE).
The Department of Health Professional Education at MWACHAS, was established in 2019 after joining all government schools situated in BMC. The department conducting continue education training to the staff in MWACHAS and other institution in the lake Zone and other zones in Tanzania when need arises. The first training was on Teaching Methodology which conducted in January 2020. The department expected to perform several short courses depending on the gaps encountered staff in their working process aiming at strengthening the teaching Personnel’s capacity. In the first training a total of 18 Teachers of different cadres from Lake Zone and Western Zone were trained.
Department tasks :To enable tutors, clinical instructors, clinical staff and leaders to have basic teaching concepts, and be able to apply leadership and management skills in managing health training institution and services programs. Moreover, will be able to perform student assessment, develop and implement curriculum. The concept of decision making based on research findings is one of the components.
The Department was established in 2019 aiming at gender and respectful care mainstreaming and integration into the society to accelerate access and
utilization of high-quality, comprehensive and integrated health services that are client centered.

Pharmacology department is new department which stated in October 2020, the It is a diploma course of three years.
