Bugando Medical Centre (BMC) with has 950 bed Capacity, serves a population of 16 Million people and attends around 300,000 patients each year. The surgical staff performs over 9,000 operations yearly and the Obstetrics service handles over 3,800 births each year The Hospital currently has a diverse of clinical Specialties and Super-specialties such as General Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Gynecology and Obstetrics , Pediatrics and Child Health, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Urology, Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, Pediatric surgery, Plastic and Reconstructive surgery, Laparoscopic Surgery, Cardiology , Nephrology, Gastroenterology, Hematology , Infectious disease , Dermatology, Oncology, Molecular studies and Nuclear Medicine.
Major clinical updates Since July 2017
Renovation of Emergency Department and CRDB Financial Support
BMC is currently renovating and expanding its Emergency Department to handle 200 outpatients (currently 100 patients).
It will have a 30 bed capacity (currently14 beds) with well-equipped resuscitation and emergency theatre rooms. On 25th May 2018,
CRDB donated a total of 240 million TZS to support the ongoing construction activities.This project has the potential provide a lot more
clinical services and reduce the rate of deaths occurring within 4 hours of arrival at BMC and adequately respond to mass casualties.
Launching of Surgical Protocol and Operating Theatre SOPs
With the growing recognition of safety challenges in health care and with regards to surgical procedures,
BMC developed Operation Theatre Guidelines in a Manual which was launched on 24th May 2018.
The manual is expected to provide useful information on the preoperative, operative and post-operative processes that should be adhered to,
in order to improve the safety and quality of patients undergoing surgical procedures
Customer Care Training
From February to April 2018, the Hospital conducted Customer care training to 825 BMC staff and 27 SUMA JKT.
Participants were trained on the basics of customer care under facilitation of Fr. John Kasembo. Customer care inspiration
talk covered the basics such as who is a customer, types of customers, customer expectations, ethics and integrity, team work,
leadership skills, attitude change for success and stress management.
Procurement and Delivery of CT Scan Machine
A 128 slice CT scan machine was purchased from Siemens in December 2018. This was one of the major achievements
which have resulted into reduction of suffering to Wananchi who could not be easily diagnosed unless they travel
to other Referral Hospitals or private diagnostic Centers. The Hospital could not purchase a CT Scan Machine for more
than 4 years due to financial Constraints. Up to 31st March 2018, a, total of 980 patients have been served.
Installation of Bhabhatron II machine and Procurement and Delivery of HDR Brachytherapy Radiation therapy
The first patient with Cancer of the Cervix was externally irradiated at BMC on 14th August 2017.
By 31st March 2018, a total of 180 patients with cancer of the cervix had received external beam radiation therapy.
In March 2018, BMC in collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency managed to procure a HDR Brachytherapy
Machine for intracavitary Radiation. The delivery of this Machine marks the inauguration of full radiotherapy treatment
at BMC as the second largest Oncology Centre in Tanzania.The set-up of this decentralization approach is expected to reduce
the time to Cancer treatment and costs related to referral abroad or Ocean Road Cancer Institute in Dar es Salaam.
Opening of New BIMA Clinical Services.
The New Bima Out-patient Clinics were inaugurated by the Mwanza Regional Commissioner,
Hon. John Mongella on 25/08/2017 aiming at serving all BIMA (Health Insured) patients in a New Building
which is fully equipped with consultation rooms, Laboratory, ECG, Ultrasound and Echocardiography Services.
This under one roof clinic severs a total of 200-250 patients per day due to improved clinical care and customer care,
and shorted waiting time.
Strengthening the Laboratory Diagnostic Capacity.
With procurement and installation of 2 biochemistry machine, 2 Hematology machine,
1 Serological machine and repair of 1 Cobas Integra machine and Sysmex machines. All the machines are fully automated.
The BMC lab is currently accredited by the South Africa Development Community Accreditation System (SADCAS)
and it can deliver 80% of the samples with 2-4 hours and can also serve private patients within 1-3 hours.
BMC laboratory has observed a great improvement in sample processed reaching a total of 101,437
tests for the period of Jan-March 2018 (compared to 70,335, Oct-Dec 2017).
Construction of a Molecular Laboratory.
This is will one of the Largest Molecular Laboratory in the Country.
It will serve as a specialized laboratory for Molecular studies such as PCR for HIV and Diagnosis of malignancies.
The project has been supported by Tanzania Health Promotion Support through CDC funding.
Renovation & Construction of Theatre Rooms.
The contract was been signed with DG GROUP of COMPANIES LTD (for construction of 5 new theatre rooms and renovation of the existing 5 rooms),
Once completed, the 10 theatres will raise the daily surgical procedures from 40 to 65; hence positively impact on the waiting time.
There are will be specialized rooms for Orthopedics, Neuro and Cardiothoracic surgeries.
New Evening and Weekend Private Clinics.
On 12thNovember 2017, the Hospital Management introduced New Evening Private clinics for various Specialties
and Super specialties. The clinics are purely being conducted by Consultants after official hours from 3.30am to 7pm and onwards,
and has attracted 50/80 specialists and 12 specialties. A total of 5,230 patients were attended from January to March 2018.
